Cgy-Jim wrote:My install just crashes with no explanation. Says see the log. What log?

Cgy-jim,

Many users who have issues installing via the bootstrapper often have success when using the direct .MSI installers which are linked above.

That being said, if you'd like to help us troubleshoot this issue here's what the error message refers to:

SETUP/INSTALL LOGS:
X1SearchSetup.log
X1Setup.log
x1search_install##########.log (looks like x1search_install635833909506379069.log)
MSI@@@@@.LOG (where @= a string of numbers and letters)

Here is how to locate those:
1. Click the "Start" button
2. In the Run box, enter the following: %TEMP%
3. Press Enter
4. In the resulting directory, sort by the 'Name" column and view the most current 'x1setup.log', 'x1search_install##########.log' and 'MSI@@@@@.LOG' files

I'm happy to pass along feedback and logs to the development team, but for best results I'd try the going through the X1 Support system.

It makes it easier for us to track trending issues and resolve them if possible.

My installation attempt also failed twice - one after a complete reboot. Same problem as Cgi-joe above.

Looking forward to a fix.

Add me to the list of those who did the update and now have a non-functioning X1.

This seems to happen every time there is an update to X1. Maybe I should just ignore future updates.

Very frustrating.

Sorry to hear you're having a bad experience. We're here and listening, however these forums are generally not the best method of finding support.

Would you mind submitting a support ticket here: https://www.x1.com/support/x1_search_submit_case.html so we can take a crack at resolving this issue for you?

Already done...and have submitted diagnostics zip file as well. I'm now on Day 2 without my desktop search. I rely on X1 heavily, and almost missed a deadline because I had to manually open dozens of documents and do individual searches in each document.

I appreciate that you're listening, but based on what I'm reading in the forums, lots of people are having problems with the latest release, and the complaints sound very similar. It sure seems like X1 pushed out a bad update, and the best things you can do at this point are (a) fix it, and (b) keep your customers informed on what you're doing to fix it, and give us a timeline.

kblount wrote:Was able to get this version installed, but I want to go back in time an beat my two day previous self for even considering the upgrade. Stupid... stupid... stupid.

I don't get it. Why do search results now take 15-20 seconds to show up? Why, once they show up, do preview windows take 10-20 seconds to show up? I moved from a perfectly functioning installation to one that, if I use it, will actually slow down my work-flow by a considerable amount.

If I uninstall and move back to the previous version (how do I even do that?), what are the odds that this installation has corrupted the previous? You should include an option on the upgrade message: "Never show this again" for those of us too stupid to leave well enough alone.

edit: Why is the "open" option in email greyed out? Why can I only open email using ctrl-o? Also, why, after waiting 10-20 seconds for the preview to show up, does the preview many times not actually show up?

X1 Search is now able to index a whole lot more files on the drive than in previous versions (including many items that we previously didn't have visibility into), and I suspect that's part and parcel of some of the behavior that you're seeing.

The PSA buttons being greyed out are generally related to two things:
1. Stale Outlook registry keys causing issues (a la https://help.x1.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001757351-X1-Search-Outlook-PSA-Buttons-Nonfunctional)
2. A known bug in MAPI (the communications layer between Outlook and X1 Search) that causes emails that are un-cached on the file system (meaning stored on the Exchange Server and not physically present in the PST/OST on the machine). We've improved on that behavior, but we're working around a Microsoft bug, so it's by no means completely fixed.

I can't tell what the particular issue is without reviewing logs, so please submit a ticket here: https://www.x1.com/support/x1_search_submit_case.html

If we can't get you up and running on 8.6, we'll roll you back to the previous version, however the checkbox in the "Options" window to disable all future automatic update checks is specific to 8.6, so you'll be prompted to upgrade from time to time.

At the suggestion of X1 tech support, I did a clean uninstall of X1 and reinstalled it. That solved the problem for me. Here are the instructions I was given, but you should confirm that this will work for you by contacting tech support. You will need your license ID and password to do the new installation. As always, be sure to set a restore point before doing anything that involves your computer's registry.

PREREQUISITE:

If you can launch the X1 interface go to Menu > License and Deactivate your current license activation.

- UNINSTALL

1. Access Control Panel > Programs & Features.

2. Uninstall X1 Search. When prompted, opt NOT to save your X1 settings.

3. Check the following locations for remaining X1 Search files, and delete them:

- C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\X1 Search - this is the default location of the X1 Search data directory.
- C:\Program Files\X1 Search - this is the install location of the X1 program files.
- C:\Program Files (x86)\X1 Search - this is the install location of the X1 program files on a 64-bit operating system, running a 32-bit version of Outlook.

NOTE: You may find an X1 Search directory under C:\ProgramData\. You do NOT need to delete this directory.

4. Click Start > Run > Regedit or click your Windows Logo Key + R to launch regedit.exe and delete the X1 Search registry keys found in any of the following locations:

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\X1 Search
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wow6432Node\X1 Search
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\X1 Search
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\X1 Search

- FRESH INSTALL

1. Perform a fresh install of X1 Search 8 by launching the X1Searchsetup.exe found here: http://download.x1.com/downloads/pro/X1SearchSetup.exe

Just make sure that those indexes aren't locked by Acronis when you're attempting to index data!

Ab So Lutely! That's why I wrote settings to close its indexer on exit.

cscott wrote:I know you're quite the power-user, so I'm interested to see your results.

I remembered the good ole saying "Never touch a running X1" and resisted to press the 8.6 button for now...

I'll check it out as soon as there are a couple of positive reviews from raving and brave fans.

X1 Search - Desktop - Install stops (Windows 10)

Hi

After moving to a new PC, I try to reinstall X1 Search (Desktop version). No Service plan active.

Was on Win 7 before, now on Win 10.

I deregistered license on old PC, entered data on new install (was accepted)

Install ends in note "Unable to complete setup due to an unexpeted error. Please see logs for details."

When i restart X1, I am NOT asked to enter license key, so seemingly that data was accepted.

Questions:

1. in which folder can I find these "log files"? (the install folder is empty, also includes no hidden files)
2. Any known fixes to this type of behaviour?

THX!

Nico

I have upgraded via the MSI download, as I was having the same problem as others have mentioned of the "error installing check logs" message when trying to install from the new version message.

I tested the install on my laptop first, to see what happened. The install went painlessly. I was expecting the index to be wiped, but it survived the upgrade and everything seems to be running as it should. I have upgraded on my PC as well (from the MSI) and have no problems with it.

The first couple of previews took a while to appear, but they are appearing quickly now. I have 320k items indexed.

I have this same problem. I've paid for and contacted X1 support five days ago and no response.I don't know what it means when you say "check your PST file...." Any help would be appreciated. Both my inbox and sent files are duplicated.

This can be a temporary issue while X1 sorts itself out.

If it persists, check your mail profiles and see if there is some sort of duplicated entry fof the PST files.

Hi

I have searched the forum for an answer to this but can't see anything.

I've had this problem with the last 2 versions of X1 but with this latest version update I thought it's time to sort it out!

Not matter what I do, new install, clean index etc., I always end up with 2 copies of the same email. This happens to all PST files. If the emails are moved from one PST to another (e.g. when archiving) I still get 2 duplicate emails reflected in the new results.

When I open the duplicates (open email or folder) X1 takes me to the same single email in Outlook.

I'm sure this sis a simple fix but I'm frustrated I can't find the answer myself Image

Specs are:

Windows 8.1 64 bit
X1 Search 8.3 (5001lw) 64 bit
Outlook 2013 64 bit
ClearContext 6.2.5 Professional

Cheers

John

moved emails in edit mode!

Lately, I have noticed that ALL emails that I move with X1 to my archive folders end up in edit mode!
If I work from Outlook and drag and drop to the same folder, the emails are "normal" received emails. So it is not a folder bug - it only happens to files moved with X1.
This is a major bug, as I cannot find a way to reverse emails in edit mode.
The emails have the the pen and paper icon, but were moved from my inbox as normal received email.

Due to this mode "reply" is blanked off and if you popout email it has original senders email at top as sender and not my email. If you send it, the archive is deleted as if it were an outbox.

I have lost emails and data due to this.

I moved files to an empty folder from the inbox with X1 and all ended up in edit mode. As mentioned, drag and drop to the same folder withing Outlook and the bug does not occur.

Hello

I'm also dropping a word to say that X1 is a good search desktop software, with a clear interface and fast search/indexing, but since it does not support Thunderbird emails I wont use be able to use it. I do not want to use or pay for 2 desktop search softwares...

At least you should develop an official plugin. Thunderbird usage is growing (more than 10 millions users in 2015) and it's probably the first alternative email client to Outlook on Windows systems. I never wanted to use Outlook or Outlook Express and I guess I am not the only one...

A disappointed trial user

You're disappointed because you tried the software without checking the docs. How is that X1's fault?

I also use Thunderbird, by the way.

Same here. I am using X1 daily since version 2, and I also stay using my old version because I need Thunderbird indexation.
I have tried many other desktop search software, and I have also bought Archivarius 3000, but I find that X1 has the best interface.
If Thunderbird support comes back, I will upgrade !

I am a long time X1 user and I use Thunderbird even longer. I really hope that X1 is going to add a Thunderbird connection that allows for seamless work. Even with the old X1 versions the user user cannot just double click on a Thunderbird message and continue to edit using Thunderbird. There are few million Thunderbird users only but not few work as multipliers in the IT industry and beyond. The usability of X1 is outstanding and I do not know any serious competitor in the market offering a comparable desktop search.

I do not blame anyone, just saying that's I am disappointed not to have found support for TB, especially since X1 is a good software, as I've written above.
And I would have said the same if I had checked the doc and noticed there is no support for Thunderbird. My message was a suggestion (call it "a wish") for the devs.

Quote:The problem with Thunderbird, and other "exotic" email clients is that very few people seem to use them in the corporate world. They are the domain of "geeks", the sort of people who prefer Unix to Windows. (Some of us have fond memories of Eudora!)

I do not recognize myself in this colourful description Image (and I am on Windows)
I began to use Thunderbird long time ago, since I wanted an alternative to Outlook which has a lot of features I do not need.
But yes, you're right, most companies are using Outlook.

I finally decided to go and buy an "Archivarius 3000" licence, it indexes all kind of mail, including Thunderbird. I'm quite happy with it. The interface is not as modern as X1, but it does a good job once you know how to use it.

Hi there,

We do not currently have plans to re-introduce Thunderbird support to Search 8. We dropped support for Thunderbird as there simply wasn't enough demand to warrant continued support.

I will move this into the Feature Request forums in the event we determine here is enough of a need for it in the future.

Thanks!
