I am interested to see some screenshots illustrating the new interface. Is it really necessary to uninstall the current version I am using in order to try the beta?

Thanks,

Hello X1 Forum community!

We are excited and proud to announce our next generation desktop search product, X1 Search 8. At the end of 2011 many of you joined us in a public beta for our Pro 7 release. In March of 2012 we suspended the Pro 7 beta. Now, as promised in our March 27th 2012 beta suspension post, we are releasing X1 Search 8. Built upon the Pro 7 code base, X1 Search 8 includes many enhancements, including carrying forward some of the features introduced in Pro 7. Before we move to the exciting product details and beta link below, please let me offer an explanation of the current status of the product and the developments of the past year.

While the majority of our Pro 7 Beta users had a positive experience, we suspended the beta to perform additional development and further optimize the code, specifically targeting overall performance and resource usage, along with speed and ease of use. Since the March 2012 beta suspension, we continued to work on the Pro 7 code base through shared development of Pro 7 and X1 Social Discovery. X1 Social Discovery is a first to market investigation and forensic collection tool that archives, searches, and tags social media content from leading social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn.

As a result of aggressive shared development, and your thoughtful and dedicated Pro 7 beta feedback, we are proud to announce a strong X1 Search 8 beta. X1 Search 8 is an ambitious upgrade that will carry our users, our organization, and the market into the next generation of search and productivity, while maintaining the core X1 goal of fast and efficient search from an intuitive interface.

X1 Search 8 Features Discussion

Throughout the Pro 7 beta, X1 Social Discovery, and Search 8 development, we spent a lot of time determining the core of the X1 experience, and making sometimes difficult product decisions, in the hopes of focusing our engineering to deliver the best possible X1 Search 8. In light of this process, and the release of X1 Social Discovery, we removed the Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn scanners from Search 8. Further, we removed the Lotus Notes scanner. For our Lotus Notes customers, we suggest continuing to use version 6.7.4 or below.

Now that we have covered what will not be part of the Search 8 beta, we list out the enhancements at the bottom of this post. Stay tuned in the coming weeks, as we will be adding additional features, including connectivity into SharePoint 2010 and the X1 Rapid Discovery server. The SharePoint and Rapid connectors further our core vision of X1 Search 8 as the single pane of glass into all of our users’ critical information.

Upgrade Guidance

Prior to installing the X1 Search 8 beta, there are a few considerations for those using a previous version of the X1 Professional Client, version 6.7.4 or below, as well as the Pro 7 beta.

Upgrading to X1 Search 8 from Professional Client Version 6.7.4 or below:

We suggest uninstalling your Professional Client prior to installing X1 Search 8. To uninstall the Professional Client, please follow the instructions in this Knowledge Base article: http://help.x1.com/entries/21087272-man ... -remove-x1.

For our Professional Client power users, while we strongly encourage you to move forward to Search 8, we understand if you want to maintain your version of the X1 Professional Client. If you plan to run both the X1 Search 8 beta and a previous version of the X1 Professional Client, please disable indexing for each data source in the X1 Professional Client product. To disable File indexing, as an example, please use Tools> Options> Files and select ‘Never-Do not index Outlook’. Please repeat these steps for each data source in your X1 Professional Client index.

Upgrading to X1 Search 8 from the Pro 7 beta:

As X1 Search 8 and Pro 7 share a common code base, you can run an update from within Pro 7, or from the updated installer below.

If you are running Pro 7, when you install X1 Search 8, it will automatically replace Pro 7. Since it is a significant upgrade, you will not maintain your existing saved searches, so please take note of your searches prior to upgrade. We apologize for any inconvenience.

FINALLY, here is a link to the X1 Search 8 beta: http://support.x1.com/cs/X1SearchSetup.exe

We look forward to an open dialogue during the beta period. We will read ALL of your feedback, and aim to respond to every piece. The more feedback the better, so please let us know all of the negatives (although we love to hear the positive as well)! Feedback can be posted within this forum, or provided from within the product by clicking the ‘Send Feedback’ button in the upper right-hand corner of the X1 Search 8 UI.

Most importantly, we want to thank you for your loyal X1 use, your detailed and thoughtful feedback, as well as your patience as we’ve worked towards the next generation of X1. Your dedicated support uncovered the issues detailed above and informed the development path that proudly brings us X1 Search 8.

Best Regards,
The X1 Team

Hi,

In both v7 and v8 there is no global "Clear Index" button. Instead, there are "Delete Index" for the individual scanners.
For example, to delete the Files index, use Menu->Data Sources and from the dialog, click on the Edit Data Source button for the Files scanner to open the Files options dialog.

Ah !
Many thanks...

Actually, sofar I haven't deleted any index files in v7beta, so, the question did not come up.
However, I then wanted to delete the small index already created on the C-drive, before I cud stop X1

Bug when previewing JPG files

dskeeles wrote:However - since starting indexing, about 2hrs later, it's trying to repeatedly download and open - in the UI - the first hit in my (empty) search window - this is a JPG in My Documents, that turns up as the first hit on an empty search. Hence I wondered why my CPU fan was whirring, and noticed I had 50+ 'download file' and 'Cannot open file' system message boxes. They were popping up as fast as I could close them.

I've since killed every process with an X1 at the front.

Hi Guys,

This is still present in the current released version... but I found the cause.

The JPEG previewer, rather than just previewing the file inline, tries to download the JPG from X1 as a file. Since the first file (earliest file, in date sort order) is a JPG, then X1 sends the preview to whatever it is... default image viewer? - and I get the download box. And because X1 repeatedly tries to preview the first file by default, I basically get continuous, unrelenting pop-up boxes, and 100% CPU utilisation to the point that my mouse pointer freezes. This is Win7 64 Pro.

Solution - I removed those two JPEGs at the top of the X1 desktop window, so the first hit/preview is a text file, and it happily previews this and works as normal.

This happens for ANY JPEG in my index that I hightlight (I get the download box, but usually only one, as it's not constantly re-loading that hit.. unlike if the FIRST file is a JPEG).

My default OS JPEG Viewer is Picasa... could this be the cause?...
SOLUTION... It seems this is the problem. I changed my OS default JPEG viewer to Windows Photo Viewer, and now it works fine.

So - please fix X1's behaviour when the default image viewer is Picasa.

Thanks,

Damian

This whole upgrade thing has been Very badly handled by X1.
Why should I have to search forums to try and figure how to get my License ID and License Password or how to download a new version from the Support portal??
Why could you not just email me the required information?

Even when I finally figured out about the Login to the support portal etc, you then get the click here to get Search 8 button which then tells you to check your emails.
Waited several minutes but their was no email - then noticed the License ID and Password at the top of the product list...Did they get added after I clicked the get version 8 button?
Weird,messy and very annoying!

I bought a new license with the beta discount. As a result I was sent two emails from the web shop. The first contained a link and one line at the bottom of the email, stating both userid and password - both being numbers. This line i swritten in font "too small to read if you are not an eagle" if you are on a 14" display, so you may easily miss it.

The other one was a mail explaning about the login details to the portal and the link.

It sounds like the beta version timed out and invited you to get the full version. If you don't have a LIcense ID and LIcense Password then you haven't shoved your money into X1's coffers.

Had you done so, they would have sent you an email with these details.

When I went to buy X1 Search 8, I also flailed around a bit trying to fathom out where to go. In the event I followed a link in the message that offered a discount for beta testers.

Hello X1 community, We cannot say thank you enough for your

You do have to login, but past customers should have the details to do that.

I guess most likely you simply have to buy a new license.

At least I had to do just now, as otherwise I could not get rid of the installation screen.
As said, even though it may be a valid argument to update the existing license key, users would normally
get some kind of warning to do so. X1 assumes you'll find out yourself...

How did you find the password from the X1 8 Beta?

Think at least they should warn you that the license should be updated!

When updating I have this window now, "Please enter your trial or paid license key"
License ID
License Password
what trial or paid license key? where?
License ID and License Password should be entered, not a key.

If you have a valid licence, then this should be associated with an email address. Have you tried the "lost password" link in the login screen?

When you get to the support site, it will also allow you to retrieve past versions that your licence includes.

I used to use X1 Professional and have a valid software assurance membership. Then I downloaded the V8 beta, which overwrote the original V6.7.4, When I purchased the original license I was sent an email with a license key, but not a password. So I can't access the X1 site to get the information. I can log-in to the Avangate site to see the original purchase, but it does not show me the latest license codes that are being referred to in these postings.

Did you follow the instructions from NigelL?

Login to X1 support on this page Product Support for Desktop Search.

There are links to do various things there.

I assume that you have bought a new licence. If not, this advice may be no use.

Where did you get your user password from? I don't appear to have ever received one from X1.

Also, I downloaded V8 this morning and ran it in trial mode, but it caused Outlook 2013 to freeze. This is quite strange as I have been using the beta for a few weeks without any issues. Are either of you using Office 2013? If so, are you experiencing any lock-up issues?
