Sorry to hear you're having a bad experience. We're here and listening, however these forums are generally not the best method of finding support.

Would you mind submitting a support ticket here: https://www.x1.com/support/x1_search_submit_case.html so we can take a crack at resolving this issue for you?

kblount wrote:Was able to get this version installed, but I want to go back in time an beat my two day previous self for even considering the upgrade. Stupid... stupid... stupid.

I don't get it. Why do search results now take 15-20 seconds to show up? Why, once they show up, do preview windows take 10-20 seconds to show up? I moved from a perfectly functioning installation to one that, if I use it, will actually slow down my work-flow by a considerable amount.

If I uninstall and move back to the previous version (how do I even do that?), what are the odds that this installation has corrupted the previous? You should include an option on the upgrade message: "Never show this again" for those of us too stupid to leave well enough alone.

edit: Why is the "open" option in email greyed out? Why can I only open email using ctrl-o? Also, why, after waiting 10-20 seconds for the preview to show up, does the preview many times not actually show up?

X1 Search is now able to index a whole lot more files on the drive than in previous versions (including many items that we previously didn't have visibility into), and I suspect that's part and parcel of some of the behavior that you're seeing.

The PSA buttons being greyed out are generally related to two things:
1. Stale Outlook registry keys causing issues (a la https://help.x1.com/hc/en-us/articles/115001757351-X1-Search-Outlook-PSA-Buttons-Nonfunctional)
2. A known bug in MAPI (the communications layer between Outlook and X1 Search) that causes emails that are un-cached on the file system (meaning stored on the Exchange Server and not physically present in the PST/OST on the machine). We've improved on that behavior, but we're working around a Microsoft bug, so it's by no means completely fixed.

I can't tell what the particular issue is without reviewing logs, so please submit a ticket here: https://www.x1.com/support/x1_search_submit_case.html

If we can't get you up and running on 8.6, we'll roll you back to the previous version, however the checkbox in the "Options" window to disable all future automatic update checks is specific to 8.6, so you'll be prompted to upgrade from time to time.

At the suggestion of X1 tech support, I did a clean uninstall of X1 and reinstalled it. That solved the problem for me. Here are the instructions I was given, but you should confirm that this will work for you by contacting tech support. You will need your license ID and password to do the new installation. As always, be sure to set a restore point before doing anything that involves your computer's registry.

PREREQUISITE:

If you can launch the X1 interface go to Menu > License and Deactivate your current license activation.

- UNINSTALL

1. Access Control Panel > Programs & Features.

2. Uninstall X1 Search. When prompted, opt NOT to save your X1 settings.

3. Check the following locations for remaining X1 Search files, and delete them:

- C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\X1 Search - this is the default location of the X1 Search data directory.
- C:\Program Files\X1 Search - this is the install location of the X1 program files.
- C:\Program Files (x86)\X1 Search - this is the install location of the X1 program files on a 64-bit operating system, running a 32-bit version of Outlook.

NOTE: You may find an X1 Search directory under C:\ProgramData\. You do NOT need to delete this directory.

4. Click Start > Run > Regedit or click your Windows Logo Key + R to launch regedit.exe and delete the X1 Search registry keys found in any of the following locations:

- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\X1 Search
- HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wow6432Node\X1 Search
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\X1 Search
- HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Wow6432Node\X1 Search

- FRESH INSTALL

1. Perform a fresh install of X1 Search 8 by launching the X1Searchsetup.exe found here: http://download.x1.com/downloads/pro/X1SearchSetup.exe

Hi,

Some years ago I bought X1 Search and was really happy with it.
I used a state of the art Notebook and X1 found everything.

Then I bought a new machine. 250GB SSD, 1TB SSD, 16GB Ram, Core i7.

But X1 8.4.1 never made it to index it fully. (1Mio Emails, ~7Mio files.)

I hate to say it: Windows 7/64 internal search "finds it". (Even though search syntax could be more effective.)
X1 does not. (Just checked - it has a 24GB index for ~3.5Mio items)

I was a big X1 fan. But now I wonder if it is still up to the job.

Anybody out there who uses X1 in a similar scale?

Kind regards,
p

Did you ever find an alternative? I seem to be running into a similar circumstance. I've spent a days trying to index my files and emails for the FIRST time on a new. It always hangs up, stalls out, crashes, and I end up having to delete the index and start over. I'm beginning to think it's not able to finish its initial scan, and I'll be left to find an alternative solution (but few exist now with the same promised feature set of X1). I would love to know what happened between the 6.x and 8.x versions.

I had much better success with older versions. v8 has just not performed well for me either. I used to index several million files, but v8 chokes after about half a million for me (3.6ghz, 64g, all nvme/ssd). I also frequently fall back to native search to find things.

I'm happy with X1, but I also use dtSearch. The interface is not nearly as friendly & efficient as X1's, but for indexing large quantities of data & finding it fast, it rocks. I also like that dtSearch can make use of synonyms.

My search dream: The UI of X1, the breadth of dtSearch, and the ability to cluster results (Carrot2).

As X1 staff feels better not answer this simple question, I assume X1 can't handle more than some Gigs of data.

Looks I need to find an alternative. If you know any, please PM. Thanks.

I cannot figure out if I'm using 8.x incorrectly or if this is just a function that was removed from 6.x.x. I've got my laptop (newest version of X1) sitting next to my desktop (last version of 6.x.x), and when I search for certain text in emails, the search term is highlighted in the preview window of 6.x.x, but not in 8.x. Text in the columns to the left of the preview panel is highlighted in 8.x (and 6.x), but not within the preview panel itself of 8.x.

Is there some option I am supposed to enable to get this functionality back in the newer version?

Well, I've figured out the why, but not a solution around it. Our models have dashes in them, and whenever "-" is part of the search term, highlighting in X1 8.x goes off the rails. I've tried enclosing my search term in quotes, but that does not help either. As long as I search without the dash included, things highlight as I expect them to, but if I try to exclude a search term using the "-" notation or use one of our model numbers with the dash, things go haywire.

Tried using a space instead of dash? " abcdef "

Your naming system seems to include a character that X1 interprets as an operator.

I've often wondered about this issue as well. I'm forced to search for xx-xx frequently and get odd results. I wouldn't have this problem except that X1 won't search midstring!

Using Outlook 2010 32 bit, since 8.4 none of the email functions work in X1. Right clicking a return or using the upper right action buttons does nothing.

Anyone else have this issue? (yes, I've had many tickets.... with virtually no response.)

In the search results, I see a number of Outlook emails which are bold and thus unread, but I cannot open them or go to the folder. Also I cannot find them by date in my inbox. I have X1 v8.5.2.7153 and Outlook 2016.

hektic wrote:Hello,

Upon installing the new version I have lost all of my results.

There are 628,000 items indexed in my X1, but the morning after installing the latest 8.6 update I can no longer view any results.

The left hand navigation tree is visible, but when you click on it nothing becomes highlighted. The software is not frozen. I can click across the top navigation menu (All, email, email and attachments, etc). However, no matter what I click on, it states "no results" even though on the bottom left hand corner it says 628,872 items indexed.

I'm running windows 10 with latest updates. I have tried uninstalling and re-installing and it makes no difference. Do you have any suggestions as to what the issue could be?

Thank you.

Exactly my situation as well.

Cgy-Jim wrote:My install just crashes with no explanation. Says see the log. What log?

Cgy-jim,

Many users who have issues installing via the bootstrapper often have success when using the direct .MSI installers which are linked above.

That being said, if you'd like to help us troubleshoot this issue here's what the error message refers to:

SETUP/INSTALL LOGS:
X1SearchSetup.log
X1Setup.log
x1search_install##########.log (looks like x1search_install635833909506379069.log)
MSI@@@@@.LOG (where @= a string of numbers and letters)

Here is how to locate those:
1. Click the "Start" button
2. In the Run box, enter the following: %TEMP%
3. Press Enter
4. In the resulting directory, sort by the 'Name" column and view the most current 'x1setup.log', 'x1search_install##########.log' and 'MSI@@@@@.LOG' files

I'm happy to pass along feedback and logs to the development team, but for best results I'd try the going through the X1 Support system.

It makes it easier for us to track trending issues and resolve them if possible.
