Cannot add Outlook PST file

I have just the other day set up X1 on a trial basis with the intent of purchasing a subscription. I cannot add my PST file which is contained on my C Drive in an DropBox folder. In trying to link Xi to that PST file, I receive a message "Your current Outlook configuration prevents scanning external PST files. Please load PST files directly into your default Outlook profile."

I have noticed that the X1 Outlook plug-ins are successfully installed. Could someone please translate the meaning of "your default Outlook profile". Thanks.

If you go to Data sources, you should see the Outlook Email section. If you Edit the Data Source you will are which bits of Outlook it is indexing.

If the PST file is a part of your Mail profile, X1 should pick it up without being told. If it is a standalone PST file, then you can go to the ADD PST FILE... slot and navigate your way to the file. Or you can tell Outlook to add that as a data file in your Profile. There some explanation about that earlier on in this discussion.

Chris Wheaton - My pst files are on internal drive D:, outlook is installed on C: and X1 hasn't indexed these files. Using Outlook 2013, not sure how to check "folders view".

Can X1 use an image to search for visually similar images?

Hi

Is it possible to use a given image to search all the images on my PC to find images that are "visually similar" using X1 Search?
(e.g. images of different sizes and different formats)

Background:
I keep failing to find certain images that I know are somewhere on my PC but whose master files are poorly named.

And if not, can anyone suggest a cheap search utility that performs this function?

Thanks

Preview of .xar files ?

Hi

Is it possible to get X1 to show the preview of a Xara (e.g. Xara Designer Pro X10 - filetype: .xar ) to appear in the right hand window of X1 Search?

Background:
I notice that in Windows Explorer (v7 x64) if you click on a .xar file you now get a preview of the file. However this fails to happen in X1 Search (v8).

Thanks

Hi

How can I create a filter on my emails (outlook) to only show emails that have images attached using X1 Search?

Sorry if this is a stupid question. Presumably we need type something into the "Attachments" field... but given that I have no idea what the attached image name would be I dont know where to start!

Trouble indexing 8.3.2.1

I read about that fix in earlier posts and installed 8.3.2.1 (build 5003eb (32-bit) a while ago. The problem seems to be that, although the indexing option for e-mail (Outlook) is set to index every minute, at numerous times during the day X1 takes a long time to index e-mails, and while the indexing process is ongoing, X1 becomes unresponsive until the indexing has stopped.

All,

We did have a preview issue in 8.3.2 related to the "Store email bodies in index" option, but we introduced a fix in 8.3.2.1.

Have you tried an uninstall and clean reinstall?

If this doesn't help, please consider opening a support ticket here:

Thanks!

I'm having a lot of trouble with preview with this new version of x1, when I select an e-mail from the list of hits on an e-mail search, the e-mail does not show up in the preview pane. Sometimes it does, but only several minutes later. This makes x1 worthless, and it is a huge setback. This new version of x1 is NOT an "upgrade" -- it's a disaster!!! How can I reinstall an earlier version of 8, which worked fine? It's not an indexing problem for me. It's a preview problem. If I double-click on the e-mail in the list of search hits, it opens up.

After installing v 8.3.2.1, I'm having difficulty Indexing (and thus Previewing) email and files. Many times I see everything "Queued", but then indexing hangs when I try to index any category. Am I the only one?

This is well outside the scope of software that is all about indexing and finding text.

Image searching is a special application that needs some heavy duty computing. You can't even do it on most cloud repositories for images, but that is probably the best place to start.

My Canon camera software claims to recognise faces, but it is not that good at it.

Your email search probably has a column for Attachments. Put "-" in there.

You can then refine by type or any other information that you have.

An Error Occured preventing installation

I received the following error when upgrading X1 today attempting to run on Windows 8.1 (64bit). I didn't loose network connectivity as the error suggests. Any suggestions on what to try?

There was a problem during the X1 Search installation. For help resolving this error please visit our support page by clicking the link below.
This installation requires that you stay connected to the Internet while installing. If you believe this connection may have been interrupted during the install attempt then please retry this installer and ensure the internet connection stays up.

This should not be necessary. I have never kept PST files on drive C.

raytek wrote:6 The Folder Selection dialog box opens, displaying a list of folders.

It is probably just remembering where you were last time you used that function.

When you add a PST file manually, it adds a prefix to the name, something like X1 Profile ABCD1234 (past filename).

raytek wrote:I tried adding an empty Outlook account on C: drive, letting it default to what ever Outlook chose, and it shows up in the X1 list of pst files. When I try and select this pst file on C: drive, I get the same error.

Where are you doing this? You can't add empty Outlook accounts on a drive.

I sense something jumbled in what you are doing in Outlook.

Here's how I manage PST files that are not a part of my day-to-day Outlook operation.

I go to Windows Mail and create a new Profile. SA profile has nothing to do with drives, or with PST files. At least, not at this stage.

How you create a profile depends on your version of Windows. Mail is a part of the Control Panel.

I create a profile and ignore Windows when it invites me to associate an email account with that profile. You have to press Cancel to get to this prompt.

When I have got the new profile, in Mail Setup I go to the Data Files... bit and add the PST files that are not already associated with my main mail profile.

X1 then detects the name of my extra profile and adds all of those PST files without prompting.

Then you can go into X1 and check that it has found all the stuff that you added in the Profile.

Before you do anything, you should invest8igate your main Profile in Outlook. The work out how to see what databases (PST files) it is using. X1 will see all of these. If you find that it has added PST files that you sense it is not indexing, then something else is happening.

Once again, this is getting confusing because you have thrown a query about X1 6.7 into a long running discussion about Windows 8. Your scenario is unlike that in the first question. Nor do we know what version of Windows you run. So I am really just guessing here in the basis of past experience.

I did an update, so now running: X1 ® Professional Client Version 6.7.4 Build 4054eu) (Created: Wed Jun 6 15:38:39 PDT 2012)
I run X1 on several computers, at home and work, so this particular install is using one of the earlier versions. This version has always worked with Outlook on other machines, but if installing version 8 on this new machine with multiple drives will work with Outlook, then I am keen to do that.

The help files tell me that this should work:
1 Click Email in the Indexing tree control to expand the email system list.

2 In the expanded list of email systems, select Outlook.

3 The Options pane displays index configuration options for Outlook.

4 Configure index update options, either manual or automatic.

5 To refine the email folders included in the in the index, click the Select Folders To Scan button.

6 The Folder Selection dialog box opens, displaying a list of folders.
(At this point I see a blank window, no list, so I select "Add PST File(s)" which then shows all the pst files in my D: drive folder, so X1 has "found" my pst files somehow without me browsing to them, very nice)

7 Select the folders you want included in the index by clicking to place a check mark in the box next to each folder name.
(I try and select a listed pst file, but don't see a "box" for check mark. I highlight the file and then select "Add", and I then get the same error)

Outlook 2013 works very well on this machine, with Outlook (and all other programs) installed on C: drive (a fast SSD), and all the accounts are on D: drive and all accounts are working.

I tried adding an empty Outlook account on C: drive, letting it default to what ever Outlook chose, and it shows up in the X1 list of pst files. When I try and select this pst file on C: drive, I get the same error.

Should I reinstall all of my outlook files onto Drive C:, into some specific folder that X1 is looking for? Is there a preferred C:/ path and file name convention I should use?

The D: drives are a collection of current and present accounts, allowing me to do historical searches on old accounts. X1 is installed on C: drive, and I can browse X1 to the D: folders and see all the pst files. When I try to select the files I get the warning " "Your current Outlook configuration prevents scanning external PST files. Please load PST files directly into your default Outlook profile."

The instructions I gave are for X1 version 8. (That is also the subject of this forum.) Now you tell me that you are using Version 6.7.4. Have you looked in its Help file?

You don't need to use any plugins to get X1 to see your PST files.

Are these PST files on drive D a part of your regular Outlook setup? Or are they extra PST files for archives?

How are you adding the D: paths? You should just browse to them.

I can't find "Data Sources" but did find "X1 Select Sources". When I try to add the D: paths to the Outlook pst files, I get problems, like it is trying to connect to external server. Is there some other selection menu that is available to me in X1?

I find this in the X1 help search for Data Sources: "Search remote data sources
If you have installed a plugin to the X1 Client, you can search remote data sources as well as your own computer. When you search remote data sources, there are a few differences to be aware of..."

Do I need to download a plugin?

Apologies. I did not realise that these PST files already showed up in your existing mail profile. I have just put you through unnecessary grief. X1 should have seen them already.

You probably ought to raise this with X1.

You might also want to start a discussion in the right place. As I said, this section is about X1 version 8. The support people may not be following it as closely as they might were it in the right place, and covered the same circumstances as the original message.
