I too am also experiencing this problem.

I've raised a Support Case (00069191) yesterday, but when I try to email X1 Support with additional information i.e. screengrab( to: customercare@x1.com), the email bounces back from Googlemail as undeliverable.

This is a complete shambles.

p.s. I put the wrong email. I've tried customercare@x1.com, but will also try customercare1@x1.com - thanks Image

How does "activation" work?

Every five days!

Consider this - I go on a writing retreat without internet connection for up to a month each year (the next one is in August), I have all my notes and research with me that I need to search. And I can't use X1!

I paid for the "Use of X1" not the "Use of X1 as long as it can connect to the internet every five days"

Is that in the fine print? Enough to drive me to Copernic or whatever.

Currently we do phone home every 5 days.

I have sent feedback re: this to the powers that be. We are revisiting this option and this may change in a future release.

I will keep you posted.

Surely Not? This means that I cannot use X1 without being connected -- and there are many times when I am not or choose not to be.

I do hope this is not the case. Who wants to have to keep a laptop permanently connected? What am I supposed to do if I am working on a train?

If so, this makes X1's new activation system even more egregious than Nuance's model of how not to do these things.

Have you fed in the activation details you received when you bought your copy? The answer is probably yes, because if not it might not even start.

I am a user of X1 since 2004. Have used the beta version until recently, now X1 Search 8, and had it delete my old X1 Pro Client.

Been working fine for a week or so. I now find that it throws me a message that it is has to be connected to the internet each time it starts in order to confirm activation! If it isn't then it just shuts down.

Surely Not? This means that I cannot use X1 without being connected -- and there are many times when I am not or choose not to be.

And no I don't want to tweak my firewall settings or whatever. I want to be able to use x1 as I purchased it (i.e. all the time) whether connected or not.

Please advise.

Well this is something that I can discuss with team members until we get our next release out which should hopefully solve these problems. In the meantime we are creating articles for uninstall and how to retrieve the older versions. ATM these two are up:

http://help.x1.com/entries/23739336-How ... -Search-8-

Re: Customer response time -- We hold ourselves to a high standard for customer response times. Without question the last few days have been trying as we have received an unprecedented number of inbound inquiries due to massive interest in X1 Search 8. However, we are catching up and things should be back to normal soon. We sincerely appreciate everyone's continued patience! While we are happy to escalate things to conference calls and go to meetings, for now the fastest and most efficient way to handle the cases is to submit via our support portal: http://www.x1.com/support/x1_search.html#login.

If you have more suggestions, we're all ears.

Rhonda

The arrival of a new way of registering and activating X1 Search raises questions that could bite users some day, if not already. So how about some answers to these questions?

  • What happens when the registration/activation fails. Is there a phone number to call? Or is it all down to email?
  • What happens if my PC crashes and I have to reinstall X2 Search 8?
  • How can I move X1 Search 8 from an old PC to a new one? Do I have to deactivate and then move it?
Some of these questions do appear in the Help file. But this may not be accessible to people who are locked out of X1. For some reason, X1 does not install a local link to the help file. So maybe this will help anyone who gets stranded and locked out:

An important consideration is the time it takes to sort out problems. Microsoft has a 24-hour phone support line to handle activation problems, either automatically or through human intervention. How quickly can we expect X1 to respond to messages?

Typing delay, heavy loads, index (no)stop

In a post a long time ago, I suggested that searching be changed with configuration settings to:
1. Only start searching after the first 'x' characters are typed. I would suggest a default of '3' characters. Searching for 't' and then 'he' and then 'the' etc as the word is typed does not seem useful.
2. Delay searching until 'y' milliseconds after the last character is typed. I would suggest a default of '200ms'. This delays the loading the search engine until something meaningful is typed. The delay is a trade-off as a longer time makes search less responsive.

I would like to suggest this again.

Otherwise, Dick99999, I suggest a speedy SSD to host your X1 index.

That's a nice feature, but when I type the second character, at least I'd like the character to be displayed. Currently, characters are sometimes even missed by S8. Searching in the windows control panel has the same feature, but I wonder how may people appreciate that behavior.

-Indexing may take up to 90 % of a dual CPU system. That makes S8 and the system unresponsive and unusable. Why isn't there a option to use x % of the CPU? Would have loved that in the Pro client.

- The pro client could stop indexing through the system tray. I cannot find that option in S8. A task manager shows that S8 is continuing indexing even if the GUI is terminated.

- just like to support those that have mentioned the lack of support for Thunderbird already

Thank you for the feedback couple of questions:

-are you saying you'd like be able to turn off the searching during typing?
-re: the 90% cpu, we have seen that in very very few cases -- possibly we can get diagnostics from your system to see why the CPU remains at that level.
re: stopping indexing in the system tray -- I can see that this becomes an improvement for another iteration

I have commented on Thunder bird several times -- and at this point we are just not moving forward with that product. I hope to get a side by side comparison up soon to help those struggling with what we support now.

Thank you for the feedback.

As I mentioned, this error is a bit hard to track down and appears to happen to a very small percentage of folks. Also I think some folks are not getting that error for the same reasons.

Having said that, we're still working to track it down and I will post more info as it becomes avail.

I am interested in what in particular you are indexing, feel free to respond back with operating system, bit, and version of outlook if you like.. I'll be checking in here regularly.

Rhonda

oh btw there a similar thread on this issue here
viewtopic.php?f=58&t=5887&p=19739&hilit=X1ServiceHost#p19739

Mostly seeing this error when re-organizing many files.
I don't know.., maybe, one way or the other X1 is loosing track / getting confused or the changes
to the indexes are too big: X1 starts to re-index but I am still in the process of re-arranging files.

Maybe I should first exit X1, do the re-organizing, then re-start X1?
However, I donot know beforehand whether I am moving just a few files or entire folders,
i.e. at what point / how many files should I exit X1
Then again, it may nót having anything to do with it.

Anyway, I re-start and the problem is solved.
Using Windows 7 x64.

Greetings All,

I assure you we are not trying to be dark and quiet. We are working diligently to get to all the support requests. This particular error has been a bit difficult to pinpoint, depending on the operating system, what is being indexed etc.

We are working one on one with folks using our diagnostic tool. We will pinpoint and fix this as soon as possible.

Thank you for your patience, and we sincerely apologize for the delay.

I can't even get the damn thing to start -up! It dies at Start-Up stating 'it cannot connect to the index service!'

WHAT.

Oh, and back level we will go... a back level we will go... HI HO a merry'o and back level we will go!

Sad really... it looks very cool.

Thanks for the prompt response. I'm a little bit more confused though. Is that ten years just for you (are you a special user) or all users who purchase a license? I wouldn't have a problem with 10 years use of the software because I normally upgrade my software when Microsoft releases a new O.S. (however, I'm not touching Windows 8 ). Furthermore, this support/licensing scheme is confusing. What is the time frame for renewal? Can users simply purchase support instead of paying for the software should a future version be released that has features we simply cannot live without?

I purchased my license in 10-27-2009, than upgraded to the Pro 7 beta (and was very satisfied, because I found 6.7.x.x to be full of so many bugs). Can I purchase support for my old license and upgrade to version 8? Or do I have to purchase a full license? I wish X1 would simplify things. I do find this "call home" business somewhat problematic. I usually have access to internet via WIFI or my hotspot or on my iPhone, nevertheless there is that odd time that I do go to an area that I have no internet access whatsoever (losing the use of X1 would really upset me).

I'm nearing making a decision. However, I do have one final question. What is the refund policy of X1? I read from one of the staff from X1 that they are contemplating changing the "call home" every five days policy. If they do modify the policy, I'm on board, if they don't I would certainly want a refund.

Thank you,
Gary

Yes, the license does expire. In my case in 10 years time.

Yes, you can buy support after your 90 days.

But, and this is probably the killer, there is a new activation regime which means that X1 won't work if you cannot maintain an internet connection.

You might find it interesting to read this discussion:

Not a pretty sight.

Hello,

I'm a licensed user of X1 version 6.7.x.x. I have been beta testing x1 Search 8 and am very please with the quality of your product. I was quite dissatisfied with the 6.7 (constant crashing, extravagent memory use etc). It seems as though you have corrected all of these problems. I am interested in upgrading to the latest version how the information concerning the new licensing scheme is not very clear and there are several rumors floating around that I would like addressed before I commit.

First, has X1 now moved to the model of renting out licenses? In other words, will we lose use of the software once the license expires (forcing us to purchase another one)? I hope that this is a bad rumor, for if this is your new policy, I will be moving to another product (and I suspect that you will begin to lose a lot of customers). My second question is, if the 90 day support is about to expire, can users purchase an additional year to extend support? I hope that you answer these question before May 28th, because that's when my trial license will expire.

Thank you,
Gary
