I last version.

I do not use Outlook search tactics.
I use file search tactics.

X1 indexes *.msg extension (see x1 indexing extesion list).

Maybe you do not understand me, my english is bad.

I have a *.msg file, called "My books.msg".
This *msg file has a attachment called "Lords of the rongs.docx".
The attachment has thousands of words, one of them is "abracadabra".

Ok,

If I use X1 main search field with the word "abracadabra" X1 shows as result the file "My books.msg", but
If I use X1 main search field with the word "Lords", X1 does not show as result the file "My books.msg" because there is a bug and X1 is indexing full attachment content but is not indexing attachment filename,

X1 version 5 indexes the filename
Pls try it.

First, update to 8.3.

Then, what do you mean by mail search field?

.msg files are not email files. In other words, they are not a part of the Outlook system. You have deliberately removed them from Outlook. So search tactics for Outlook or other email may not be relevant for .msg files.

There are plenty of messages out in Google land on the challenge of indexing and searching the contents of msg files.

You seem to have devised a way to do what you want. Perhaps that it how things are supposed to work.

I think that it is a bug.
I will describe it again as bug.

So what is this mail search field that you talk about?

Attachments are email attachments.

To quote the help file:

Quote:Selecting Attachments will find matching results in any email attachment, including the body of the attachment and/or any attachment metadata field. Your search will be applied to any attachment regardless of what type of Outlook item it was attached to (Email, Calendar entry, Contact or Task).

It is very confusing to use terms that X1 uses for its support of Outlook in completely different contexts.

If a msg file has a second file associated with it, that second file is not an attachment in the sense that X1 and Outlook use that term.

I suspect that this is true in all of the languages that Outlook and X1 support.

Nope. I am well aware of the use of .msg files. The things litter my system.

Then again, use of the word "enveloping" could confuse people. That words is usually used differently in an email context.

In this case, as I understand the original message, the msg file is the "envelope", to use your word, for xls files. As you said the key bit is "with an attachment". And X1 isn't finding content within that attachment.

Unless you have a way of making this work?

I filed an official support request and got an response to do an uninstall / reinstall as also to send the diagnostic output.
All of this was done and have thereafter followed up practically every day, but have not heard back yet (:

As you have premium support, I'd file an official support request.

Ever since I purchased the X1 Search Client with Premium Support, it becomes unresponsive after a few minutes of starting.
Thereafter, it will not start again till I do a Windows restart, and then it becomes unresponsive again.

The Windows error details are appended below.

Would appreciate any information to resolve this problem.

Thanks,

I downloaded and installed the trial version of X1 but get the following message every time I open the program.

The program works, but this message keeps popping up from time to time when X1 is open.

Anyone know how to fix this problem?

Just ask it. I have never known anyone to be turned away with real problems. In any case, you get "free" support for the first 30 days, possibly longer. I forget.

Works fine here.

When an application fails to save its settings – it happens to a lot of them, especially Logitech's software to save configurations for its hardware – my first suspicion is that Windows is closing too quickly for the application to save its settings to disk. So my first troubleshooting attempt is to shut down the application itself. The either reboot or just reopen the application to see if that has fixed it.

Hi there,

Can you clarify whether the Data Sources you are setting to "Never" update have ever completed an initial scan?

Once a scan is complete, the never setting should stick. However, if an initial scan has never completed, then X1 will attempt to finish it on startup, regardless of what setting you have used. The idea is that this setting is meant to be the behavior after the initial scan is complete.

If you have definitely completed a scan and experience this, then there may be a bug, however we cannot reproduce it internally.

Please let me know.

Thanks!

I am getting rather frustrated with this product and am regretting having upgraded. I also resent having to pay X1 more more money a few days after purchase to get a basic question answered. Is this failure to save indexing preferences a known issue? Am I expected to pay X1 for "premium support" to establish whether there is a deficiency in the product?

X1 Search 8.3.1.1 not saving data source options

Hi,

I am a long time user of X1 search technologies and I have just upgraded to version 8.3.1.1. The way I use X1 is to turn off all automatic indexing and just manually index at a time to suit myself. It was easy to do this in previous versions. In 8.3.1.1, if I go into Manage Data Sources and set the Collection Schedule to "never repeat", it saves that option OK but then when I exit X1 and enter it again (e.g. after rebooting) it has gone back to the default of collection every 30 minutes.

Grrr..... is there any workaround for this other than keeping X1 unloaded until I want it?

Thanks

One strategy for checking this would be to create a saved search for Unindexed files.

You'd need to add the Indexing status column. Then you can use -OK as a filter to weed files that are just fine.

The interesting thing is that files that are too big have no status flag at all. Broken files have a helpful status flag.

In the example cited above, files >100MB would be blank, while something just on the edge would be OK.

Thanks for making me revisit this one. I have now started the task of sorting out dud PDF files.

Thanks.

What would be impact when this number would be increased to -say- 6, 8 or 10MB?

Rather than users having to split such big documents into sizes that X1 can handle.
Quite a job trying to split -say- a 400MB document into 5x 80MB as
a. one doesn't know when the (in this example) 80 MB has been reached - one might end up with a document that is slightly above the 100mb
b. a lot of harddisk activities
etc.

X1 Search 8 will index up to 2MB of total text of any given document.

The maximum file size setting determines the total size of files that X1 will attempt to index. This is meant to capture documents that may have other elements such as formatting and images that can drive up the total size of a file. Word documents are a perfect example of file sizes being larger than immediately makes sense for the amount of text they contain.

2MB of text is a lot of text, and we've found this maximum to be more than sufficient for a typical business user's needs.

Yes, you may have documents that have more than 2MB of text, but these generally fall out of the standard business productivity use-case.

You could try splitting up your documents so they can be indexed, but this may be an onerous task depending on the size, formatting, and nature of the document.

I hope this helps explain what you are experiencing.

Thanks!

Yes, confirm this.
In the past I used to scan a lot of old documents and saved them into single PDF's (depending on the subject)
Files often got as big as 300, 400MB. The biggest ones were 500/600MB.
Regretfully they are not bein indexed by X1, even when setting the size to 999MB (under options)
Maybe because it would take too long, or too much CPU resources, I don't know.
However, if that were the case, I guess, maybe users should decide then: they may decide to let X1 run overnight for example.
dtSearch ($199) may be a bit expensive for individuals I guess.

I have set my max file size for content indexing to "99999 MB". I have selected a folder of TMX files (many of them up to a GB or so in size), and set X1 to index "Everything" in the folder.

I tried using "File names and sizes" and adding ".TMX" and "TMX" to the Specify File Types list, but this didn't work.

Indexing completes way too quickly and most of my TMXs are not indexed.

I also just noticed that other files, large .txt files are not being indexed.

It would appear that X1 isn't indexing anything above 100MB or so. At least that's the largest files I can spot in the results.

What am I doing wrong?
