Cannot add Outlook PST file

I did an update, so now running: X1 ® Professional Client Version 6.7.4 Build 4054eu) (Created: Wed Jun 6 15:38:39 PDT 2012)
I run X1 on several computers, at home and work, so this particular install is using one of the earlier versions. This version has always worked with Outlook on other machines, but if installing version 8 on this new machine with multiple drives will work with Outlook, then I am keen to do that.

The help files tell me that this should work:
1 Click Email in the Indexing tree control to expand the email system list.

2 In the expanded list of email systems, select Outlook.

3 The Options pane displays index configuration options for Outlook.

4 Configure index update options, either manual or automatic.

5 To refine the email folders included in the in the index, click the Select Folders To Scan button.

6 The Folder Selection dialog box opens, displaying a list of folders.
(At this point I see a blank window, no list, so I select "Add PST File(s)" which then shows all the pst files in my D: drive folder, so X1 has "found" my pst files somehow without me browsing to them, very nice)

7 Select the folders you want included in the index by clicking to place a check mark in the box next to each folder name.
(I try and select a listed pst file, but don't see a "box" for check mark. I highlight the file and then select "Add", and I then get the same error)

Outlook 2013 works very well on this machine, with Outlook (and all other programs) installed on C: drive (a fast SSD), and all the accounts are on D: drive and all accounts are working.

I tried adding an empty Outlook account on C: drive, letting it default to what ever Outlook chose, and it shows up in the X1 list of pst files. When I try and select this pst file on C: drive, I get the same error.

Should I reinstall all of my outlook files onto Drive C:, into some specific folder that X1 is looking for? Is there a preferred C:/ path and file name convention I should use?

The D: drives are a collection of current and present accounts, allowing me to do historical searches on old accounts. X1 is installed on C: drive, and I can browse X1 to the D: folders and see all the pst files. When I try to select the files I get the warning " "Your current Outlook configuration prevents scanning external PST files. Please load PST files directly into your default Outlook profile."
